What is Retinoscopy?
Retinoscopy is a technique used to determine a patient’s refractive error and so prescription for corrective lenses can be given. Eye doctors examine the retina so they can find out whether a person has myopia, hyperopia, or emmetropia and consequently, identify its degree.
How is Retinoscopy Done?
Eye doctors use a handheld instrument called a retinoscope that emits a beam of light. They move the light horizontally and vertically across a patient’s eye and examine the movement of the red reflex from the retina. To neutralize the movement, they introduce lenses to the eye. The power of lens needed to neutralize corresponds to the refractive error of the eye as well as the lens strength necessary for the contact lenses.
What are other alternatives to Retinoscopy?
For children, there are other techniques that can be used to determine the refractive error of their eyes. Two of which are autorefraction and subjective refraction. In autorefraction, a computing device is used while the patient is asked to stay still and look at an object for several seconds so as to get an accurate measurement. In subjective refraction meanwhile, the patient works with the eye doctor in determining which lenses offer optimum vision.
